Built in 1887 by architect William Channing Whitney, the mansion at The Abbey's entrance is a historic Loring Park landmark. Once considered among Minneapolis' 10 most endangered historic places, the 133-year-old stone structure was first the residence of Horatio Alden Smith -partner in the Smith & Wyman Sash and Door Co. Over the years, the mansion became home to several notable Minneapolis families before being purchased by the state in 1996. For a decade, the site served as offices for Minneapolis College. But as restoration costs mounted, the mansion faced an uncertain future. Until now.
